Educational Requirements

The educational requirements for psychologists in New York are that a candidate must have a doctoral degree in psychology. The degree must be earned at an institution chartered by the New York State Board of Regents and approved as licensure-qualifying, or it must meet the same educational requirements set by the department. Institutions must also hold regional accreditation. Applicants must also earn a passing score on the Examination for Professional Practice of Psychology (EPPP), which can be taken upon conferral of the doctoral degree and completion of 1,750 hours of supervised work experience. Prospective psychologists can take the exam an unlimited number of times but no more than four times per year. New York does not require psychologists to complete continuing education programs to maintain their licenses.
