How to Become a Psychologist in Louisiana

How to Become a Psychologist in Louisiana

Educational Requirements

Psychologists in Louisiana must be at least 21 years old, hold a doctoral degree in psychology from an accredited institution, and be a resident of the state to be licensed to practice psychology. The doctoral degree must be earned from either the graduate program within a university or a specialized psychology school. Regardless of the institution, many students will spend four to six years in school after they complete their undergraduate program. Online psychology programs are also acceptable for licensure in Louisiana if they’re approved by the American Psychological Association (APA). You can see a list of APA-approved programs on the organization’s website.

Continuing Education Requirements

Louisiana’s State Board of Examiners of Psychologists requires licensed practitioners to complete 30 credit hours of continuing education courses within the two-year reporting period. Two of the 30 credits must be in ethics or forensics. Psychologists who have licenses from odd years report their credits on odd years, and even licenses report in even years. The reporting period is July 1 through June 30. There are six ways to earn continuing education credit, including completion of a for-credit graduate-level course at an accredited institution of higher education; preparation and teaching of a seminar or workshop; and attendance at a professional meeting, conference, or convention that lasts longer than one full day. Psychologists can earn credit from accredited institutions of higher education, hospitals that have APA-approved doctoral internship training programs, activities sponsored by the Board of Examiners of Psychologists, and more.

Psychology Licensure in Louisiana

Louisiana grants licensure to psychologists and medical psychologists. Medical psychologists are licensed psychologists who have doctoral degrees as well as an additional master’s degree in clinical psychopharmacology. These psychologists can prescribe medication for the treatment of mental and emotional disorders whereas standard psychologist can only provide counseling and psychotherapy.
