How to Become a Psychologist in Kansas

How to Become a Psychologist in Kansas

Educational Requirements

The state’s Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board’s Statutes and Regulations requires psychologists to have earned a doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution to be eligible for licensure. The program must also be accredited by the American Psychological Association, or, barring that, meet requirements listed in its Statutes and Regulations. Additionally, psychologists must have two years of supervised experience. One year (1,800 hours) can be a pre-doctoral internship, but at least one year must be post-doctoral. Throughout their practice, psychologists in Kansas are also required to continue their education through such activities as attending workshops, taking academic courses, and presenting papers. This ensures that they are staying current in their profession, and also signals to patients that state standards are being met.

Continuing Education Requirements

Any practicing licensed psychologist in Kansas is required to complete 50 hours of continuing education every two years to renew his or her license. At least three of these hours must be related to the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. The state’s Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board notes that the content of each continuing education activity “shall be clearly related to the enhancement of psychology practice, values, skills, or knowledge.” Acceptable continuing education activities include attendance at workshops, seminars, and presentations sponsored, accredited, or conducted by educational institutions, professional associations, or private institutions, self-study programs, publication and professional presentation, academic courses, providing supervision, receiving supervision, preparation for a specialty board examination, participation in quality assurance committees or activities, participation in a relevant professional organization, and receiving personal psychotherapy that is provided by a licensed or certified mental health provider and is a part of a designated training program.

Salaries for Psychologists in Kansas

Based on the latest figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, clinical, counseling, and school psychologists earned an average of $55,960 a year in Kansas in May 2010. All other psychologists earned $90,890 at that time. Both salaries are higher than the average annual salary for all occupations in the state, which is $40,030. These figures are not guarantees, of course; factors such as employer, employee credentials, and economic climate can also influence how much you earn as a psychologist.
