How to Become a Psychologist in Iowa
Under state law, to practice as a psychologist in Iowa, you must have a doctoral degree in psychology. The degree must be from a regionally accredited institution, and the program from which the doctoral degree is granted must be accredited by the American Psychological Association or the Canadian Psychological Association, or designated by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards National Register Designation Project as a doctoral program in psychology. A specialty diploma by examination from the American Board of Professional Psychology would meet education requirements for licensure.
Practicing psychologists are required to continue their education throughout their careers, completing 40 hours of continuing education every two years to renew their license. This mandate helps ensure that the state’s mental healthcare professionals are sufficiently trained and up-to-date on the best practices and technology in the field. It also reassures patients that psychology professionals meets state standards to practice and administer healthcare.
Continuing Education Requirements
Under Iowa law, continuing education is defined as “planned, organized learning acts designed to maintain, improve, or expand a licensee’s knowledge and skills in order for the licensee to develop new knowledge and skills relevant to the enhancement of practice, education, or theory development to improve the safety and welfare of the public.” Any licensed psychologist in Iowa is required to complete 40 hours of continuing education approved by the Board to renew their license. Licenses must be renewed each biennium, which begins on July 1 of even-numbered years and ends on June 30 of even-numbered years. First-time licensees do not have to complete continuing education as a prerequisite for the renewal of their licenses.
The state sets general criteria for approved continuing education. Appropriate continuing education activities must contribute directly to the professional competency of the licensee, cover subject matter which relates to the practice of the profession, and be conducted by individuals who have specialized education, training, and experience. Additionally the state mandates that for the second license renewal, six hours of continuing education must be in the areas of Iowa mental health laws and regulations, or risk management. Every renewal period after that must include six hours in ethical issues, federal mental health laws and regulations, Iowa mental health laws and regulations, or risk management. Continuing education hours may be obtained by attending programs sponsored by the American Psychological Association or the Iowa Psychological Association, completing academic coursework, home study courses, or online courses, conducting scholarly research, preparing new courses, or attending workshops, conferences, or symposiums.
