How to Become a Psychologist in Indiana

How to Become a Psychologist in Indiana

Educational Requirements

To practice as a psychologist in Indiana, the state requires that you possess a doctorate degree from a recognized institution of higher learning. The degree program must also be approved by the Indiana State Psychology Board as a psychology program at the time the degree was conferred, as well as require the student to complete a 1,500-hour internship. These are the requirements for licensure as a psychologist, which restrict the licensee from engaging in the diagnosis and treatment of mental and behavioral disorders unless under supervision. To directly engage in this practice, psychologists must possess an endorsement as a health service provider in psychology. This requires that the licensee complete 1,600 hours of supervised experience on top of the 1,500-hour internship.

Only psychologists who are endorsed as health service providers in psychology in Indiana are required by the state to complete continuing education hours to renew their license. This ensures that these specialists are properly trained and meet the standards set by the state throughout their professional career. Those without this endorsement do not have any continuing education requirements.

Continuing Education Requirements

According to the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency, only psychologists who are endorsed as health service providers in psychology are required to complete continuing education to renew their license (therefore, if you are a licensed psychologist in Indiana who is not endorsed as a health service provider in psychology, you do not have to complete any continuing education). Specially, 40 hours of continuing education must be completed during every two-year license period.

The state classifies continuing education into two categories. Category I activities include formally organized courses, workshops, seminars, symposia, post-doctoral institutes, and home-study programs. Category II activities include journal clubs, colloquia, programs offered at professional or scientific meetings relevant to psychology, and individualized learning. Of the 40 required continuing education hours, six must be in ethics, with no fewer than three in category I ethics. A minimum of 20 credits hours must be in category I courses, and no more than 20 will be granted for category II activities.
