Educational Requirements

The Joint Committee on Administrative Rules Administrative Code stipulates education requirements for psychologists in Illinois. According to the code, psychologists must be graduates of a doctoral program in clinical, school, or counseling psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association or approved by the Council for the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, or its equivalent. Additionally, psychologists must complete two years of supervised clinical, school, or counseling psychology experience, one year of which must be post-doctoral.

Psychologists working in Illinois must continue their education to keep practicing in the state. The state requires 24 hours of continuing education to be eligible to renew your license every two years. This education requirement ensures that the state’s psychologists are properly trained, as well as assures patients that healthcare standards are in place.

Continuing Education Requirements

Licensed psychologists must renew their license every two years in Illinois. Under the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules Administrative Code, a licensed psychologist in Illinois must complete 24 hours of continuing education to remain eligible for license renewal, beginning with the September 30, 2014 renewal and continuing through every renewal after that. At least three of the 24 hours must be related to the ethical practice of clinical psychology.

As detailed in the Administrative Code, continuing education hours can be earned by verified attendance at or participation in a program or course that is offered or sponsored by an approved continuing education sponsor, such as the American Psychological Association or Illinois Psychological Association. A maximum of 18 continuing education hours may be completed via distance learning courses or programs. Additional credit may be earned through postgraduate training programs or for verified teaching in the field of psychology.

Psychology Licensure in Illinois

Any psychologist in Illinois must be licensed to practice. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation administers licensures in psychology by examination, endorsement, for senior practice, and by acceptance of examination:

  • Psychologist – Examination
    • Education: Doctoral degree in clinical, school, or counseling psychology
    • Exam: Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology
    • Work Experience: Two years of supervised clinical psychology experience, at least one year of which must be post-doctoral
  • Psychologist – Endorsement
    • Education: Doctoral degree
    • Exam: Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology
    • Work Experience: Has a license in a state other than Illinois
    • Other Prerequisites: At least two years of satisfactory supervised experience in clinical psychology, at least one of which is an internship and one of which is postdoctoral
  • Psychologist – Senior
    • Education: Doctoral degree
    • Work Experience: 20 years consecutive practice in clinical psychology
    • Other Prerequisites: Must submit proof of licensure in every jurisdiction ever licensed
  • Psychologist – Acceptance of Examination
    • Education: Doctoral degree
    • Exam: Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology

According to the most recent figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, clinical, counseling, and school psychologists working in Illinois made on average $68,180 a year as of May 2010. All other psychologists reported a salary of $97,600. This is significantly larger than the average annual salary for all occupations in the state, which is $46,550.
