How to Become a Psychologist in Idaho
To become licensed to practice as a psychologist in Idaho, state law requires that psychologists hold a doctoral degree in psychology or a related field. This degree must be from an accredited school. Additionally, psychologists must have completed one year of pre-doctoral training through a practicum or internship and one year of post-doctoral training to be eligible for licensure. Once licensed, the state requires psychologists to complete 20 hours of continuing education every year in order to renew their license. Credits must be relevant to the psychologist’s area of expertise and may include topics such as ethics, standards of care, and the law as it relates to their practice. This requirement ensures that the state’s practicing psychologists are up-to-date on best practices in the profession, as well as signals to patients that healthcare standards are being upheld.
Continuing Education Requirements
The Idaho Board of Psychologist Examiners requires that any licensed psychologist in Idaho complete 20 hours of continuing education credits per year to be eligible to renew his or her license. A minimum of four hours in ethics, standards of care, and/or review of law pertaining to the practice of psychology is required every three years. Areas covered may include practice, consultation, research, teaching, and/or supervision.
The Board oversees acceptable forms of continuing education. Approved methods include workshops or classes offered through regionally accredited institutions of higher education or the American Psychological Association. Additionally, psychologists may earn credit for international, national, or regional meetings of psychological organizations, relevant workshops, classes, or training experiences, the presentation of papers, self-study, lectures, or public or professional publications and presentations, online education, and teleconferences.
Psychology Licensure in Idaho
As noted by the Idaho Board of Psychologist Examiners, “Idaho law requires the licensure of all persons who practice or offer to practice psychology in the State of Idaho.” Psychologists can be licensed through both examination and endorsement. Licensure may also be obtained if you hold a current Certificate of Professional Qualification from Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards or if you meet the requirements as a Senior Psychologist.
